Pet Microchipping
No matter how well behaved they are, it’s possible for virtually any pet to escape home to roam the neighborhood. And once they get a couple of blocks from home, the chances of them returning are surprisingly low. If your pet is lucky, someone will find it and turn it into the local shelter. But what happens then? If you’ve been smart, you’ve had your pet microchipped, which gives the shelter a 100 percent chance of finding you and returning your furry family member. At Village Veterinary Clinic, we recommend that all of our patients be microchipped as a quick and harmless safety measure.
What Is Microchipping?
A microchip is an electronic chip that’s set inside a glass coating about the size of a cupcake sprinkle. One of our veterinarians will insert the microchip under your pet’s skin right above the shoulder blades, using a needle just like the ones used for vaccinations. The microchip is able to give off a unique code number, which can be read by a specialized device.
Once your pet has been microchipped, you’ll go online to the company’s website to input all of your contact information. If your pet is every picked up and taken to a shelter, the workers there will read the microchip, input the code number, and get your contact information. After that, it’s a simple task to call you and let you know where your pet is being held.
